We join with anti-racist feminists around the globe as we mourn the loss of bell hooks as a visionary and touchstone. At this time, the story behind the Hopkinsville native author, critic, feminist and public intellectual, bell hooks’ cause of death is unrevealed since she passed away today (December 15, 2021) at the age of 69. ![]() bell hooks (born Gloria Jean Watkins Septem December 15, 2021), was an American university professor specializing in social criticism focused on groups distinguished. Some of us had the joy of seeing her give presentations at UCSB, and others benefitted from her mentorship at different universities. If an individual is not successful in emotionally crippling himself, he can count on patriarchal men to enact rituals of power that will assault his self-esteem. We teach bell hooks in our Feminist Studies courses. and Professor at Colgage University Meika Loe, organized a roundtable at the National Women’s Studies Association conference to discuss hooks’ classic Teaching to Transgress and Becky Thompson’s Teaching with Tenderness. ![]() In November 2021, UCSB graduate students Anna Wald, AP Pierce and Alex Mireles and Chair Laury Oaks, along with UCSB Sociology/Feminist Studies Ph.D. She was the author of many books, including Ain’t I a Woman: Black Women and Feminism, Feminist Theory: From Margin to Center, Teaching to Transgress, Feminism is for Everybody: Passionate Politics, Killing Rage, and All About Love: New Visions. The Department of Feminist Studies recognizes and honors the life, activism, and Black feminist scholarship of bell hooks.
